Scull, Σκαλμός

Scull in English is a type of oar, and from this the name of a boat and the practice of rowing or racing with boats. It has no known etymology.

In Greek it would be κωπή (κουπί). Snce it is a nautical term, I merely looked at other terms of the boat and found σκαρμός <. σκαλμός, which is a certain type of hinge which hold oars.

Scull is attested since the 14th century, and it might be a direct loan from Greek at the time. Since there is no alternative, I find it very possible, that the sound was imitated. The verb form is Σκάλλω (skalo) and it means stir or hoe!
